Tryggve
Tryggve is an improved crutch, designed to improve the every day use
With the Tryggve crutch I explored functionality, comfort, and aesthetics of forearm crutches, and how they can be improved. Interviews and observations with users experiencing pain or injury revealed recurring issues: poor grip ergonomics, difficult height adjustment, instability when resting crutches against surfaces, and the visual stigma attached to standard aids. These insights showed a clear need for crutches that support daily use both practically and emotionally.
The result is a concept design addressing five key areas: an improved ergonomic grip, a redesigned armrest, a non-slip foot for wet or uneven terrain, finer height adjustability, and features that help the crutch lean securely against surfaces. It is fully customisable to the users' measurements to ensure a perfect fit, no matter hand size, armlength or height. It includes a foam padding that helps with shock absorption to help ease pain in arms, wrists and hands. The user can pick colour and finish to fully create a crutch that suits them in all possible ways.
The design offers realistic and scalable ideas for the future. Additional possibilities for customization and enhancement are explored in the project's reflection. This work positions the crutch not just as a medical device, but as a personal object worthy of thoughtful, user-centred design. If you ever need a crutch, Tryggve will be your biggest supporter.
