SPORE

An exploration of a new sustainable material in ski helmets

SPORE is a proof-of-concept ski helmet that explores mycelium-based composites as a sustainable alternative to the EPS foam used in modern helmets. Inspired by Salomon and the question “What if Salomon made innovative protective gear?”, the project investigates how future protective equipment could combine performance, safety, and environmental responsibility without compromising design or user experience.

Modern ski helmets are difficult to recycle and often become waste despite containing valuable material resources. Through research into materials, safety standards, and user needs, the project highlights the environmental challenges of today’s helmets and explores mycelium composites as a lightweight, shock-absorbing, and biodegradable alternative.

Inspired by both Salomon’s design language and the organic structures of mycelium, the helmet combines sharp geometric forms with natural detailing. To bring the design to life after sketching and clay modeling, AI was then used to visualize the final concept. SPORE aims to inspire further material innovation and encourage a more sustainable approach to the future of protective equipment.
