Rädda Rescue Ramp

Rescuing the threatened hedgehog

Us humans tend to shape our built environment primarily for ourselves, often overlooking other species. The hedgehog, a 30 million year old species, is today threatened in Sweden. One risk comes from urban structures such as canals, pools, and steep-sided pits that can trap small animals.

This project presents an escape ramp developed through testing with hedgehogs at a rescue clinic. The ramp is adaptable to different contexts, such as cellar stairs, ponds, canals, and swimming pools. While the hedgehog initiated the project, the design addresses a broader issue affecting multiple species, highlighting how our architecture centers human needs while excluding others.

The project emphasizes the use of materials that do not harm the environment. The ramp is modular to suit different heights and situations. To better understand structures suitable for small mammals to climb, prototypes were tested with hedgehogs at KFV Skanör.
