The Line
Active sitting solution for communal workshop activity in museum and gallery space
There are several sitting postures for different activities so as to offer the most comfort possible, but it is for any case never recommended to keep the same pose too long. Should we consider comfortable sitting pose the ultimate goal, or is it the micro-movement while sitting that matters? This project investigates sitting activity in museum and gallery workshop spaces, which are evolving into cultural hubs for communal education and collaborative spirit via participatory sessions, and informal skill-sharing for general audience. This can be considered a new public seating subcategory alongside casual seating for relaxation, and pure functional seating in professional workshops. For these activities, it is expected that participants maintain a proactive manner and creative spirit, which can be improved by sitting more actively. A tilting seat surface gives the user's feet and legs control over the chair's tilting movements, keeping the feet muscles in constant activity, facilitating better blood circulation. Body posture also affect cognitive functions - keeping the back in an erect position creates a stronger sense of confidence than slouching and retracting.
The Line stool offer a middle ground between right-angle sitting and other postures like perching, standing, or squatting that make more active use of the whole body. The seat supports slight bouncing, and its frame structure details allows user to shift between several foot postures. Compact wheels on the back legs and handle integrated into the seat surface help users to drag the stool while moving around.
