Post-Sauna Cooling: A Gradual Transition
This project began as an exploration of experimental-led design, where material experimentation guided the design process forward, ultimately leading to the final concept. The guiding theme of the experiments focused on using traditional materials in unconventional ways, challenging established perceptions of materials such as ceramics and wood.
Through a series of experiments, the project investigated how hard materials could behave within flexible systems. Different test pieces explored a spectrum between rigid, semi-flexible and highly flexible structures. One particular experiment, a woven ceramic net, revealed unexpected tactile and sensory qualities and became the foundation for the continued development of the project.
The ceramic net introduced a naturally cooling tactile experience through the thermal properties of ceramics, while the weight and flexibility of the woven structure created a calming and relaxing sensation against the body.
The final concept was developed within the context of post-sauna cooling, an established ritual in which the cooling ceramic net structure could be naturally introduced. Inspired by Finnish sauna culture, the project explores an alternative to the traditional intense post-sauna cold plunge by proposing a gentler and more gradual cooling experience.
