Byte
A digital handheld audio recorder that feels as good as it sounds.
We live in a time where everything is turning digital, and products are being built through softwares on screens. The relationship between human and object holds less and less space for meaningful interaction and sentimental value.
Byte is a digital handheld audio recorder designed to extend the emotional reach in a context where products have ceased to be companions. Inspired by the architecture of analog tape recorders, by encapsulating high-tech functionality with haptic and playful elements, Byte enhances the relationship between product and user through purposeful interaction.
This project examines the opportunities of 3D-printing as a production method. It enables a product platform based on one single component package, with the flexibility to offer different casings and functionalities tailored for different needs. This stimulates a new way of designing, shifting from mass-production to human-centered design, with a focus on individuals and customizability.
The showcased design caters to the user who wants a reliable recorder with easy access to functions and features while being out and about. 3D-printing allows for innovative details and a more complex product structure without increasing production costs, making Byte an interesting and approachable addition to the current market.
