BOB

Tiles cover a surface by dividing it into small individual parts, a process called tessellation. We took this technique as a starting point for our experiments and transferred it from a flat surface to a three-dimensional body. Testing different materials and joining methods resulted in a material structure that combines the stability of wood and the flexibility of fabric by sewing them together. BOB is a seating pouf made solely from beech wood, cotton canvas and cotton thread.

The half-spherical body is divided into individual flat wooden segments with holes to sew the fabric onto. The wooden pieces are sewn by hand through the holes on the fabric, placing them with small gaps in between. This allows the pieces to bend and create the desired round shape. The movement of the pieces gives BOB enough flexibility on the surface to be a comfortable seating furniture, but is strong enough to hold the weight and maintain the actual structure. BOB has a detailed and unique appearance due to the hand sewing. The colours reflect the playfulness of the process and highlight the seams as a structural and distinctive element of BOB.
