How can nature and computational methods redefine design in both function and visual aspects?
ALGO is a project exploring how natural structures and algorithmic logic can be used to design personalized protection. The result is a wrist protector for snowboarders, aimed at reducing the risk of injury without compromising comfort or aesthetics. Wrist injuries are among the most common in snowboarding, but many riders still avoid using protection because it's uncomfortable, bulky, or doesn't look good. This project challenges that by using a 3D scan of the rider's hand to generate a form that fits the anatomy precisely. Based on this scan, a parametric script creates a structure that adapts to different areas of the wrist, offering more support where needed and flexibility where possible. The form takes inspiration from nature, specifically the adaptive cellular structure of pomelo peel. Utilizing the properties that react to impact and pressure. The goal was to create something that feels good, works well, and speaks to the individuality of the rider. Protection doesn't have to be invisible or boring, it can be a visible, personal part of your gear.
